چکیده

We show that kinematically peculiar cores may be generated in stellar spiral-spiral mergers. Kinematic segregation appears as the central bulges transport orbital angular momentum inward to the center of the remnant, while the outer parts keep the spin signature of the precursor disks. The peculiar core is composed mostly of bulge material, and its size best matches that of observed peculiar cores for mergers with unequal galaxy masses (∼2:1). Population decoupling is predicted by the rapid radial decrease of the bulge fraction in the remnant. In this scenario, a starburst may pump up the remnant metallicity, but otherwise the high metallicity of the kinematically decoupled core is built on the high metal content of the inner bulges rather than on a high selfenrichment of a population built from scratch out of the precursors’ gas. Mergers with galaxy mass ratios 3:1 and above generate disk galaxies with counterrotating bulges. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Kinematic Clues to the Formation and Evolution of Galaxies Kinematic Clues to the Formation and Evolution of Galaxies

To my mother, for her love of science and the curiosity she awakened in me iii iv Abstract This work investigates clues to galaxy evolution in the internal gas and stellar kinematics of 200 nearby galaxies, representing all morphological types and spanning luminosities from M B = ?23 to ?15. The frequency and morphology distribution of galaxies with counterrotating gas and stars provides fossil...

The influence of gas on the structure of disk merger remnants

We present a large set of merger simulations of early-type disc galaxies with mass ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 and 10% of the total disc mass in gas. The internal orbital structure and the kinematic and photometric properties of the remnants are analysed in detail and compared to pure stellar mergers. In contrast to the collisionless case equal-mass mergers with gas do not result in very boxy remnant...

Constraining the star formation histories of spiral bulges

Stellar populations in spiral bulges are investigated using the Lick system of spectral indices. Long-slit spectroscopic observations of line strengths and kinematics made along the minor axes of four spiral bulges are reported. Comparisons are made between central line strengths in spiral bulges and those in other morphological types [elliptical, spheroidal (Sph) and S0]. The bulges investigat...
